How to make it
- In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, cornstarch, baking powder, dried orange zest, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Mix everything well.
- In a smaller bowl, whisk together orange juice, canola oil, and a pinch of turmeric or orange food coloring until smooth. Add more food coloring or a drop of juice if needed, as your flour may absorb more liquid.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until you have a smooth, easily shapeable dough. If the dough feels crumbly even when well mixed, add a drop of orange juice.
- Taste the dough - if it needs more orange flavor, add extra zest, then wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, though overnight is ideal for the best flavor.
- After resting, remove the dough from the refrigerator and preheat your oven to 180°C with top and bottom heat (no convection). Portion the dough into small pieces weighing about 35 grams each.
- Roll each piece into a smooth ball in your palms and place on parchment paper or another non-stick surface.
- For best results, freeze the balls for 15 minutes.
- Test one ball first: freeze it, coat in sugar, and bake following the instructions below. If after 10 minutes of baking the crinkles spread flat, gradually work in 10 grams of flour with a mixer or by hand, then test again with one ball.
- Once all balls are shaped and frozen for at least 15 minutes, coat them first in granulated sugar mixed with vanilla sugar - press the sugar firmly into each ball so it adheres well, not just on the surface.
- Next, coat the balls generously in powdered sugar. Apply a thick layer so the crinkles look beautiful and the sugar doesn't melt away during baking.
- Arrange the coated balls with spacing on a parchment-lined baking sheet, about 6-8 pieces per sheet.
- Bake the vegan orange crinkles for 10-12 minutes. Remove them when you're happy with their shape - don't let them overbake into flat cookies.
- Let the cookies cool slightly on the baking sheet before enjoying them warm, or store in an airtight container to keep them from drying out.
