Vegan Bread Dumplings
Traditional Slovak vegan bread dumplings made with a simple yeast dough. These fluffy, pillowy dumplings are perfect served alongside hearty stews and goulash, and freeze beautifully for future meals.
Ingredients
dough
- 500 g semi-coarse flour
- 350 ml water
- 15 g fresh yeast
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Contains: gluten
How to make it
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and crumbled yeast. Mix well.
- Pour in the water and stir until a sticky dough forms. The dough will be quite wet. Dust the dough lightly with flour and cover. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- After an hour, divide the dough on a floured surface into 2 or 4 parts, depending on how large dumplings your pot can accommodate. If you have a sufficiently large pot, you don’t need to divide the dough and can prepare one large dumpling weighing about 1 kg. I divided the dough into 4 parts and shaped them into loaves. Coat each dumpling thoroughly in flour so it doesn’t stick. Then let them rise for another 20 minutes.
- Fill a pot halfway with water and bring it to a boil. Add the shaped dough (I cooked 2 bread dumplings at once, adjust based on the size of your pot) and cover with a lid. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes without uncovering.
- Let the bread dumpling cool, lightly brush it with oil, and then freeze it. You can use it as a side dish whenever you need.
